RLNC 2008 – “Reaching Across the Community”

Saturday, May 17, 2008 – 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Little Lake Grange

$15 Donation includes lunch

The third annual Regional Localization Networking Conference (RLNC) will be a little different than the last two.  In the past we reserved the Brooktrails Lodge for two nights and two days and invited localizers from all over the

Western United States

.  At that time there were no other centers of localization in the

Western United States

.  Now there are localization groups all over.  This year the invitation is going out to

Mendocino

County

,

Lake

County

, Southern Humboldt County, and anyone else particularly interested in what we are doing around here as far as localization is concerned.  We will have a one day event to make it convenient for our neighbors to car-pool here without the need for a sleep-over.  We will only charge $15 to make it affordable for everyone who wants to attend.

The theme this year, “Reaching Across the Community” is about talking to those parts of the community that we may not be reaching.  We have invited a panel of community leaders from a broad spectrum of our community to share their thoughts on 1) how their organization enhances Community Self Reliance; 2) how they mend fences and relationships within their organization, and 3) how do they want outsiders to their organization to seek to influence them.  This will be followed by lunch and break out discussions to follow-up the morning panel.  We will have a presentation by the Willits Women’s Council titled “What’s That You Said?” – Communication Styles.

The panel members that have graciously agreed to help us are:

Sheriff Tom Allman

Maricela Nieto of Nuestra Alianza de Willits

Lynn Kennelly of the Willits Chamber of Commerce

Mayor

Holly Madrigal

of the City of

Willits

Ron Orenstein – Rotarian and former City Council Member

Trina Fitzgeral

Tribal Administrator of

Sherwood

Valley

Rancheria

Margie Handley of the Howard Foundation

Rev.

Steve Thrift

of the

Agape

Church

As in years past, this RLNC is sponsored by WELL and the City of

Willits

Raj Patel will be discussing his first book, Stuffed & Staved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

From Raj's Website, here is a description of his background:

"I'm currently a visiting scholar in the Center for African Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, a Fellow at the Institute of Food and Development Policy and a Research Associate at the School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I've just returned from two years working in South Africa, based out of the Centre for Civil Society at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Before that, I was a Policy Analyst at the Institute for Food and Development Policy/Food First, where I learned about the importance of land struggles, and got involved with The Land Research Action Network. The book that I co-edited with the network has just come out, and is available online, free, at Food First/promisedland.

Land reform politics are a new way for me to look at institutions like the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, and the IMF. Of these three, I have in the past worked for two. Before Food First, I volunteered with SEATINI (Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Initiative), in Harare, Zimbabwe where I was doing my PhD research, and working with some fine activists including men from Padare, a pro-feminist men's group.

All of this was in the service of a PhD, which I gained from Cornell University's Department of Development Sociology. Before that, I was a researcher in UNCTAD's Least Developed Countries Programme, to which I arrived with a Masters Degree from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Philosophy Politics and Economics, from Balliol College, Oxford."
